    Product Details

Mwiria is located at 1650-1800 meters in Manyatta sub county, Embu. It is surrounded by scenic highlands; South west of Mt. Kenya forest and is situated in an area famed for producing some of the world’s finest coffees.

Taste description: Red currant aroma with notes of purple grape, plum and black tea. Wonderful high quality acidity and amazing structure.

Mwiria CWF is one of three washing stations in the Central Gandori Farmer’s Co-operative Society. It was built in 1964 when Kenya produced more coffee than it does today, so it's bigger than needed now. The current chairman, Patrik Nyaga, has been in office since 2017 and has increased the number of co-op farmers. The society has three wet mills: Mwiria, Kathangari, and Karurini.

The Central Gandori FCS has 3,000 members, with 1,000 actively participating. The management committee consists of five members, four men and one woman, including the CEO. The society employs 19 permanent staff, with three of them being female. The number of seasonal workers depends on coffee production in high and low seasons.

The coffee varieties grown in this region are a mix of old SL plants and newer Ruiru and Batian, which are becoming more popular because they yield more and resist pests better than SL.

This particular lot is a fully washed AA selection harvested at the end of January 2023. They pick the coffee by hand at Mwiria and process it using water from the Rupingazia River.

Cherries are delivered to wet mill the same day it is picked. Cherry sorting is carried out at the wet mill prior to the pulping. Red ripe cherries are separated from under ripe, overripe and foreign matter. Cherries are pupled, and initially in fermentation tanks 36-48 hours before washed, and undertaking a second soaking for 12 hours. Beans skin dry 6 hours before they are moved to drying tables where they dry for about 14 days until they reach the right water content. Processing utilizes clean river water that is recirculated before disposal into seepage pits. Sun drying is done before delivery of the coffee to the dry mill for secondary processing.

Amount: Our specialty coffee range comes in 250-gram jars of whole beans roasted for filter or slightly edgy espresso, packed and shipped on demand for maximum freshness. These coffees hit the sweet spot between specialty coffee and competition-style coffee, with a taste profile that is both exciting and unique.
