From Hacienda La Esmeralda — the reference point for Gesha.
Some coffees are selected because they are beautiful. Others because they are important. This is both.
We chose Buenos Aires Washed Gesha because it represents one of the clearest expressions of why Hacienda La Esmeralda still holds such a rare position in coffee. Many farms produce Gesha today. Very few produce it with this level of calm precision, year after year, in a way that continues to define the category rather than follow it.
At Best of Panama 2025, Esmeralda once again confirmed its place at the very top: 98.00 points for Washed Gesha and 97.00 points for Natural. Two historic results, judged by an international panel of 22 judges. For us, the score is not the reason to buy the coffee. It is confirmation of what the cup already tells you.
The coffees produced by Rachel Peterson and her family are truly astounding, and we are fortunate to be able to share a few different of their top scoring micro lots.
Buenos Aires Washed Gesha is a pure expression of Boquete terroir.
Taste description: Delicate florals lead the cup, with cherry blossom, jasmine and orange blossom on the nose. The sweetness is refined and transparent, moving toward white peach, ripe citrus and red apple, with a soft cane sugar character underneath. Hibiscus adds lift, while a clean tea-like structure gives the cup shape and length. The body feels silky and composed, the acidity is bright, malic and citrus-driven, and the finish stays sparkling, precise and remarkably long.
Story: High in the misty mountains of Panama, Hacienda La Esmeralda has spent decades shaping what Gesha coffee can be. Meticulous farming, volcanic soils, and a singular microclimate have made this farm one of the most important names in modern coffee. Their work did not simply popularise Gesha. It changed what people believed coffee could taste like.

Our story: I still remember the first time I tasted a coffee from Hacienda La Esmeralda years ago. It didn’t shout. It didn’t try to impress. It just sat there, calm and exact, and quietly reset my understanding of what Gesha could be. That feeling comes back every time we work with their coffees.
Buenos Aires Washed Gesha is exactly the kind of coffee we want Standout Coffee to be known for. Not because it is famous, although it is. Not because it is rare, although access to lots like this is extremely limited. We selected it because it carries the qualities we believe matter most: clarity, restraint, depth, provenance and a feeling of quiet authority in the cup.
This is why coffees from Esmeralda remain so difficult to access. They are not built around volume. They are built around specific plots, precise pickings and decisions made with patience rather than speed. At Best of Panama 2025, the results spoke clearly. 98 points for Washed Gesha. 97 points for Natural. Not by chance. Not by hype. By repetition, discipline and an almost stubborn commitment to detail that very few farms in the world can maintain year after year.
Buenos Aires is a pure expression of Boquete. You smell jasmine and cherry blossom first, soft and lifted. Then the cup opens into white peach, ripe citrus and red apple, carried by clean cane sugar sweetness and a fine tea-like structure. The washed process gives the coffee focus. Nothing feels heavy, nothing feels hidden. It is bright, floral and transparent from start to finish, with sparkling acidity and a finish that keeps unfolding long after the cup is empty.
For us, this release is not about rarity for the sake of rarity. It is about offering a reference point. A coffee that explains why Hacienda La Esmeralda still matters. A coffee that shows what Gesha can be when nothing is rushed, nothing is forced and nothing is compromised.
This is the role we want Standout Coffee to play. To search carefully, select with conviction and share coffees that deserve attention not only because they are exclusive, but because they move the conversation forward.
Buenos Aires Washed Gesha is one of those coffees.
