Story
The Janson Farms story is rooted in family commitment and long-term care for the land. It began in 1926 when Carl Axel Janson, only 21 years old, left Sweden for Panama and started what would become a multi-generation legacy.
Like several farms founded in the same era, the land was first used for dairy farming. It wasn’t until the 1980s that its potential for coffee became clear. In 1990, Carl’s sons Michael, Carl, Ricardo, and Peter took over and formally established Janson Coffee, guided by the same focus on quality and respect for nature. Today, the farms are led by Kai, Janette, and Miguel, continuing the family’s work with high-end specialty coffees, including Panama Gesha.
Janson Coffee operates two farms along the Talamanca Mountain Range on the slopes of the Tizingal and Barú volcanoes. Hacienda Las Lagunas sits west of Barú, named for its wetlands and lagoons, surrounded by protected natural areas that support birdlife and wildlife. Los Alpes, named after the Swiss Alps, borders La Amistad International Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching between Panama and Costa Rica.
Coffees from the Janson family are produced in small volumes and handled with care at every step, allowing each lot to reflect its place and process with clarity.
