Atoma is a privately owned washing station located in Western Ethiopia, owned and operated by Mike Mamo. It is the second site that he owns in the Gera Woreda, the first being Telila, located in the Kecho Anderacha Kebele. Atoma is also sometimes referred to as Telila site two.
The Atoma Station completed its first full season of operation during the 2022/2023 season. Despite its age, Atoma benefits from the expertise and knowledge of Fikru Demissie (pictured above, left), who oversees quality control. In addition to his roles at Atoma and Telila, Fikru has served as head of coffee and quality control for Addis Exporter, Atoma's sister company, for the past 20 years. Through vertical integration, Addis Exporter also acts as the dry miller and exporter for Atoma and Telila lots.
The Kebele of Tuma Tesso is quite remote. So much so that it still lacks access to electricity. Farmers bring their cherry to the Atoma Washing Station on horseback, often making the trip twice each evening during the harvest.
2024/2025 Harvest Notes
Every harvest season in every coffee-producing country brings its own set of challenges, and Ethiopia’s 2024/2025 season was no exception. The harvest in Gera began unusually early, which might have been manageable were it not for the erratic weather. The region around Telila and Atoma received little to no ripening rain, resulting in poor and uneven cherry development. In many cases, cherries went straight from green to dry without ever properly ripening. This challenge was further complicated by a spike in cherry prices. While it’s always heartening to see farmers earn strong prices, there’s a tough paradox in coffee: the higher the price, the lower the quality. That’s because, at high prices, the incentive to be selective during harvest diminishes. When everything pays well, everything gets delivered—ripe or not. Even so, Telila and Atoma performed admirably. Their teams worked with patience and precision in a year that rewarded neither. The resulting coffees are still full of the soft melon, ginger, and citrus complexity we’ve come to love from this region.
We’re proud to continue working with Mike and remain deeply grateful for their friendship and partnership.
